Manifold training

The Manifold track follows the route of an old railway line, long since gone. It weaves along by the river Manifold in a limestone valley of the Peak District. The river disappears under the rocks unless there has been heavy rainfall. There are caves enroute , hills, sheep grazing, and endless native trees. Really a nice quiet walk. It’s a cycle track now and the firm surface makes it a good place for a Camino training walk in winter. And so that’s where I went yesterday. 14 km brisk walk. Here are some pictures

The valley
Riverbed. The waters were flowing here fast in November. Now they have seeped down into the underlying limestone
One of the caves in the hillside. This is a popular cliff face for climbers in summer
Thor’s cave with prehistory inside. It is accessible by a steep path but I didn’t go up today. The ground is still very muddy after a extremely wet autumn/winter
Further up the trail, the river was flowing and this was a lovely stream

That was a good training walk. It took 3 hours 20 minutes – 14 km with 300 metres ascent & descent.

One thing that planning to walk the Camino has done for me is get me out the door walking, even when the weather is not particularly pleasant. I’m trying to do one training walk a week. My distances/times have definitely improved since the summer. But oh was it nice to come home to hot chocolate and a hot shower.
